Every week and almost every day there’s a serious accident on 307. Injury, sometimes death and definitely destruction are running rampant on this stretch of road from Cancun to Tulum. The accidents have become more frequent and more serious. This issue needs the attention of the Quintana Roo government and soon.
307 is the life blood for a large portion of the state’s valuable tourism industry. And yet it appears in large part to be neglected. Next time you travel this highway take note of its failures.
Until recently there were large strips of broken surfaces some of which have been repaired but other sections are still wanting. The lighting on the highway is sporadic, there are generally no lane markers, signage is hit and miss and many road signs lie damaged on the side.
There appears to be no effort to moderate speeds around busy entrance locations. And enforcement of speed limits and dangerous driving behavior seems non-existent.
Every week there’s a traffic tight-up causing kilometers-long traffic jambs. Airport users cannot depend on the highway to be clear. This definitely tarnishes the area’s reputation.
So what’s the solution? In my opinion the Governor needs to assign responsibility for this highway to a senior official, ask for an immediate short-term plan to deal with the glaring deficiencies and a budget requirement. A reasonable plan should be approved, properly funded and checked by her personally to make sure it happens. She should require work to be done in off-busy hours with proper police involved traffic control.
Additionally, traffic specialists should be engaged to make recommendations on better traffic control features in dangerous areas. Reduced speeds and appropriate lane markers are obvious solutions but I’m sure there are several economical ways to improve the flow and safety of traffic in these areas.
