Letters to the Editor: Can Tulum Survive

A lazy day. Starting off with a hot cup of coffee. A little reading. A walk with the dogs. Think I’ll hop in a cab ang go to the beach. I fill my backpack with a snack and a water bottle. I walk out to the road and hail a taxi. One quickly pulls up and greet me with a warn smile.

“Where to?” I ask for the beach. After 10 minutes he pulls over and I get out, hand him 100 pesos, grab my things and walk up the path to the beach. I settle down and take out a muffin and my water bottle. Ah, this is going to be relaxing.

Beep, beep, beep. Dang, have to turn off the alarm. That same pesky dream had me fooled again. Now reality will set in.

This is the dream the mayor wants to keep having. He is asleep at the wheel. Tulum has many, many issues which he does little about. Police corruption, high food and drink prices, high crime, extortionist taxi rates, poor infrastructure, road ways in poor condition, bad lighting, still limited beach access.

When a politician pats himself on the back for giving the people what is a federal law (beach access) and makes it seem like he rolled up his sleeves and dug in “for the people” well, that is delusion in the highest.

Tourism is down in Tulum. There is no “smear” campaign. It is simply word getting around to avoid this place. Apparently all the world has access to social media but for those who govern this state. The same issues are brought up time after time on social media platforms. How is it they can’t see this? We can and certainly tourists can and do.

Tulum and her people need better than this. They need to wake up from that dream and start doing something about it. Not announce for people to “say nice things” which he laughingly did.

Be better. Do better.
Bob, Tulum
