Leaking cylinder gets LP gas station shut for lack of safety during refill

Cancun, Q.R. — The Cancun fire department located a leaking tank at an LP gas station Tuesday during a cylinder refill. Responding firemen found a 20-liter tank with a hole after reports of a strong smell of gas.

According to the City of Cancun, the fire department, in coordination with Civil Protection and emergency services, responded to a gas leak inside a Prado Norte gas station in SM 260 Tuesday.

The incident was reported by the emergency service dispatcher, immediately activating unit 970 from Base 6. Upon arrival, a 20-kilogram LP gas cylinder was located that had a hole in the bottom, causing an active leak.

Cancun firemen found a hole in the bottom of a cylinder that was being refilled by a customer.

“Firefighters secured the area and established a safety perimeter to prevent further risks. Control and ventilation procedures were carried out to reduce the gas concentration in the environment.

“Once the leak was contained, the cylinder was secured and moved to a safe location, preventing any further risk.

“The medical unit QR-303, the person in charge of the establishment and one other collaborator, did not detect injuries that warranted transfer,” City Hall reported.

Civil Protection reported that the incident occurred when a customer was refilling a cylinder tank. During the refill of the cylinder, the bottom broke, creating the hole that caused the leak.

The LP refill gas station has been closed by the city.

“Due to the lack of adequate safety measures and the absence of supervision during the filling process, the establishment was closed by this authority.”
