Lázaro Cárdenas, Q.R. — An explosion and fire at a CFE facility in Lázaro Cárdenas left thousands of residents without power. The explosion and subsequent fire happened early Monday morning in the state’s northern municipality.

The explosion was reported after midnight at an electrical substation on Javier Rojo Gómez Avenue. Approximately 10,000 people were left without electricity. Municipal residents took to social media to report the lack of power.
Authorities responded with Municipal Police sectioning off the burning area. Firemen and Civil Protection personnel worked to extinguish the blaze. Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrived after the fire to assess the damage.
Residents of the Centro, Unidad Deportiva and Capa neighborhoods that rely on the substation were left in the dark when the CFE facility exploded. The power outage caused various disruptions in nearby regions where people continue to report interrupted and/or very slow Internet and phone services.
According to available information, the towns of San Ángel, Solferino and Chiquilá have also been affected by the fire. Late Monday morning, Lázaro Cárdenas City Hall posted “Due to power outages, all services and procedures at Ayuntamiento de Lázaro Cárdenas are temporarily suspended until further notice.”

As of the time of going to press, electricity around various areas of the municipality was still down.
