Late night transformer explosions leave parts of PDC in the dark

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Areas of Playa del Carmen were left without electricity Tuesday night due to multiple transformer explosions. A section of Fifth Avenue is reported to have been one of at least six areas affected by the fiery blasts.

At least three electrical transformers suffered a series of electrical overloads causing blackouts in approximately six neighborhoods. Blackouts were recorded in the Ejido neighborhood, El Edén and Villas del Sol Cuarto and Quinto Parque subdivisions, as well as in the tourist area along 38th Street North between Quinta Avenue and 10th Avenue North.

The first incident occurred near the CFE Playa del Carmen substation on Playa del Carmen Boulevard. That explosion involved a transformer located on a pole on 14th Street North and 50th Avenue, causing the power to go out in the Ejido neighborhood.

The second transformer that suffered an overload was on North 38th Street between Fifth Avenue and North 10th Avenue, causing the entire block to go dark. In two areas of Villas del Sol in the west, an overloaded transformer at a substation on the extension of Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue also failed, leaving residents there without electricity.

PDC firemen responded to reports of an on-fire transformer in the city center Tuesday night.

During the failures, hundreds were affected. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) had not issued a statement regarding the multiple incidents but were seen attending to the burnt out transformers at various locations late Tuesday.
