Large residential area of Cancun starts New Year without power after driver mows down pole

Cancun, Q.R. — Hundreds of residents in south Cancun were left without electricity on the first day of the New Year. Personnel from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) found the power supply had been knocked out by an SUV.

Police were called to an area at the end of España Avenue in south Cancun Thursday when the CFE responded to reports of a power outage. It was around noon when residents called the CFE to complain.

At the scene, CFE technicians found one of their poles had been mowed down by a compact SUV. The hit pole then dragged two other poles to the ground. A total of three electrical poles were affected by the single vehicle accident.

The vehicle was found abandoned after the driver broke the first power pole at its base, cutting electricity to a large residential area. The first concrete pole was knocked to the ground by a brown Renault Duster that was found abandoned in roadside vegetation.

Electricity was interrupted in several residential areas, affecting hundreds of people. Municipal Transit arrived and had the abandoned vehicle towed so CFE could begin repairs. Cancun Transit continue the proceedings to track down the owner of the vehicle.
