Cancun, Q.R. — A large fire reported in a recycling plant outside the city of Cancun was contained by the fire department Sunday. According to Cancun City Hall, emergency services spent the better part of the day off the federal highway near the community of Tres Reyes.
“Rescue teams, operational personnel, and paramedics from Civil Protection, in coordination with the Cancun Fire Department, worked the scene to control the situation and ensure the safety of the public,” they reported Sunday.

Cancun firemen were at the location along José López Portillo Avenue where city officials reported “the fire was contained without any injuries.”
The Cancun fire department said the fire started Sunday morning “at a recycling plant where various combustible materials were stored, including oils, tires, and chemicals.”
Due to strong winds, the first fire spread to a neighboring scrapyard property where hundreds of cars were being stored. Firemen were tasked with extinguishing two other smaller fires on that property due to the spread.
“Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the flames had spread to a tow yard belonging to a company, involving several vehicles. Two fire lines were established to contain the fire and protect surrounding areas,” the fire department reported.
Four 10,000-liter water tankers, a 5,000-liter pumper truck, and operational personnel from the Cancun Fire Department were deployed. Personnel carried out out firefighting, cooling, and exposure protection operations.”

Authorities did not provide a cause for the fire that started in the recycling plant.
