Javier May leaves Fonatur for shot at Governor of Tabasco

Mexico City, Mexico — Javier May Rodriguez, the head of Fonatur (the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism) is resigning from his position. On Monday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the resignation of May who intends to run for Governor of Tabasco.

May’s departure is effective immediately so he can focus on the June 2024 elections. In his place, López Obrador has announced General Óscar David Lozano Águila.

“Now General Óscar David Lozano Águila is going to take charge. He is going to be the General Director of the majority state-owned company Tren Maya. He is already here with us and has already been working, but formally, by decision of the Secretary of Defense General Luis Cresencio Sandoval, he is going to be responsible for this company,” López Obrador explained during his Monday press conference.

Javier May became the head of Fonatur in January of 2022, at which time he took over the reins from Rogelio Jiménez Pons which meant heading the mega Tren Maya project.

May handed in his resignation Monday, one day after AMLO test toured the Maya Train over a two day trip from Campeche to Cancun.
