Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Workers are calling for the withdrawal and modification of the initiative to reform the ISSSTE Law. Their call for the withdrawal came after a March 10 meeting with the governor.
On the night of March 10, teachers from Quintana Roo, through the Teachers’ Struggle Committee, met with Governor Mara Lezama in the city of Chetumal. During the meeting, teachers were asked to return to classes, but refused.
According to Committee leader Xavier Méndez, they are not giving in and will continue with an indefinite strike. He says they will continue to fight until the proposed reform of the ISSSTE Law is withdrawn and amended.
“They wanted us to return to school but we didn’t give in. We’re still on an indefinite strike, we’re still fighting,” Méndez said.
According to Méndez, it was the governor who asked the teachers to return to classes. Since they declined, they agreed to arrange a meeting with the Director General of ISSSTE, Martí Batres, in Mexico City since it is a federal issue.
Quintana Roo teachers, who have been striking nearly two weeks, have said that as long as the initiative is not withdrawn and modified, the strike will continue, pending a favorable response to their demands.
