Island’s privileged geolocation has kept Isla Mujeres beaches ‘looking spectacular’

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Mayor of Isla Mujeres says thanks to their privileged geolocation, beaches remain clear of sargassum. Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde says as summer approaches, Isla Mujeres beaches are clean and tidy.

That is due in part to cleaning efforts as well as to the island’s strategic location. Zofemat boss (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) Dayana Alejandra Pérez Medina says Isla Mujeres has not experienced a complicated sargassum situation like other municipalities in the state have. She says the municipality’s beaches “look spectacular”.

“Unlike other municipalities experiencing a complicated situation with sargassum, things are different on Isla Mujeres and our beaches look spectacular early in the morning,” said Pérez Medina.

She says that the island’s Playa Centro and Playa Norte have earned the Blue Flag and Platinum certifications which certify them, among other criteria, for water quality, safety and cleanliness of their beaches.

Their strategic location has meant sargassum free beaches year after year. Playa Norte June 14, 2025.

Every day before sunrise, she says staff from her department begin general cleaning, sand raking and sargassum removal.

The cleanup is carried out through Zofemat Isla Mujeres, whose staff works hard every day to clean the sand and remove sargassum so that the beaches, which are one of the destination’s main attractions, always look spectacular to welcome island families and thousands of tourists who arrive daily to Isla Mujeres.
