Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Isla Mujeres City Council has approved the transfer of a CAPA (Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado) property to Aguakan. The land has been earmarked for the construction of a municipal water demineralization plant.
The plant will be built and operated by Aguakan and incorporate reverse osmosis technology with an initial capacity of 15 liters per second with a scalable capacity of up to 60 liters per second. The plant will have a backup power system to ensure supply even in emergency situations or during hurricanes.
It will be built in the southern part of the island on land in the Mundaca subdivision near the Mundaca Drinking Water Tank 4. The demineralization plant will be the municipality’s first, considered a strategic and sustainable project that contributes to the growth of the island municipality.
It will reduce dependence on the current underwater pipeline while taking future growth into consideration. The new plant will cost of around 33 million pesos. A start date for construction was not provided.
