Isla Mujeres, Q.T. — The municipality of Isla Mujeres has clarified that there is no plan to host an electronic music festival on the island. The municipality clarified that there has not been any permit request by any person or company to host such an event.
In a public statement, Isla Mujeres City Council said “based on information circulating in the media about the event “Fyre Festival II”, the General Directorate of Tourism of Isla Mujeres informs that no person or company has requested permits from this Director or anyone else from the Municipal Government for said event.”
The public notice was released by the municipality after online rumors about a Fyre Festival taking place on a private island. While the “private island” was not named, there was speculation that it was Isla Mujeres.
Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres has denied those rumors.

The concern arose after a 2017 Fyre Festival on an island in the Bahamas landed its organizer in prison for fraud. According to sources, the original festival was organized by American businessman Billy McFarland and American rapper Ja Rule.
During the start of the festival, a host of problems lead to the event being indefinitely postponed and eventually cancelled. In March 2018, McFarland pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud to defraud investors and ticket holders, and a second count to defraud a ticket vendor.
In October 2018, McFarland was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to forfeit $26 million USD. Several class action lawsuits were initiated after his sentencing in excess of $100 million USD.

The only festival currently being promoted for Isla Mujeres and the rest of the state of Quintana Roo is Carnival 2025.
