Isla Mujeres starts projects to restore beach access and ensure free passage

Isla Mujeres, Q.R — Isla Mujeres is working on projects to restore beach access. Municipal Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde says they are are working on a program to regularize and restore access to the sea in areas better known as bocacalles or street corner intersections.

Authorities on Isla Mujeres August 7 ensure free passage on island beach areas.

She says the project is being carried out through the Directorates of Inspection, Urban Development, Environment and Ecology, Cadastre and the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat).

Authorities began the street access restoration at Playa Norte where two bocacalles were restored. She says one at the end of Hidalgo Street and another at the end of Carlos Lazo Street.

Municipal Planning Director Soledad Che Celis says the program aims to return beach access to the islanders so they can enjoy the beautiful beaches of Isla Mujeres.

The municipal official added that work is also being done to regularize beach lounge chairs and beds on the beaches so that concessionaires respect the permitted space.

“From where the waves break, a five-meter strip should be left clear so that island families and tourists have space to walk freely along the seashore,” said Che Celis.

Two streets have also been cleared to ensure public beach access August 7, 2025.

The Planning Director reiterated that the Municipal Government is committed to continuing to promote tourism, but with order.
