Isla Mujeres mainland beaches of Costa Mujeres cleared of storm sargassum

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Hurricane Beryl’s easterly winds also left Isla Mujeres mainland beaches covered in sargassum. The areas around Punta Sam along with 11 kilometers of Costa Mujeres sand were left covered with the seaweed.

Volunteers started the removal process Tuesday and finished Wednesday, removing tons of wet sargassum. Hotel staff along with Zofemat (Federal Maritime Land Zone) personnel and resident volunteers spent the two days returning the area to pre-Beryl conditions.

“Better results are achieved as a team! The warriors of Zofemat Isla Mujeres, with the help of the staff of Zona Continental and volunteers, worked from early in the morning to clean the beach and remove the atypical sargassum that washed up in Punta Sam after the passage of Hurricane Beryl,” Mayor Athena Gómez Ricalde posted Wednesday.

Both Isla Mujeres island and mainland beaches were affected by sargassum.

In June, bad weather left 583 tons of sargassum on Isla Mujeres island beaches. The same island beach areas where hit again in early July by Beryl that left behind 69 tons to be removed.
