Isla Mujeres island garbage transfer site revamped and modernized

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An area that was once an eyesore for the island of Isla Mujeres has been transformed. The garbage transfer station that once stood holding thousands of tons of garbage for nearly a year is now modernized.

Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde announced the new transfer station Wednesday. She says it has been expanded and is now complete with an office building and mechanical hopper. The new building is fully functional for municipal garbage collectors use, being outfitted with laundry, showers and a dining room, while the hopper will be used to optimize disposals.

The area was revamped after, when she became mayor two years earlier, the previous administration left 30,000 tons of unmoved garbage in the site.

“Committed to the efficiency and modernization of public services, the Municipal Government, headed by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, transformed the transfer station where new offices, a dining room, laundry and bathrooms with showers were built to dignify the work carried out by the staff in charge of keeping Isla Mujeres clean, tidy and beautiful.

“In addition to the expansion of the facilities, the transfer station was equipped with a new mechanical hopper that will optimize the processes for the deposit, unloading and final transfer of waste,” she said.

Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez recalled that in the first 100 days of her government, more than 30,000 tons of garbage was removed from the site. The garbage was trucked from the island to the mainland by ferry during the night over a period of more than three months after being neglected by the previous administration.

“Now we are moving to a new stage. We continue to transform to guarantee a long-term public services policy,” she said.

The General Director of Isla Mujeres Public Works, Ángel Hernández Azueta, explained that the site now has an access gate, parking and administrative area, full bathrooms, a platform for vehicle sanitation, an absorption well and a sewage treatment plant.
