Isla Mujeres island beaches pass inspections and recertified with Blue Flags

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Two island beaches of Isla Mujeres have been awarded Blue Flag certification. Both Playa Norte and Playa Centro were recertified after passing the international control and evaluation visit Friday.

Sand sifting for cleanliness is part of the inspection process May 8, 2026.

“Playa Norte and Playa Centro passed the control and evaluation visit conducted by the International Audit Committee with excellent marks,” Isla Mujeres City Hall reported at the start of the weekend.

The excellent marks means both beaches maintain their Blue Flag certification, an international distinction that recognizes beaches that meet high standards of water quality, safety, cleanliness, services, management, and environmental education.

“During this inspection, various criteria related to the maintenance and operation of both beaches were verified, yielding positive results thanks to the ongoing commitment of the Municipal Government,” the municipality added.

Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde said these results reflect the daily efforts of the dedicated workers of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat), who contribute to the care of the beaches.

The mayor added that her administration will continue to promote actions to maintain and strengthen international standards that allow them to retain Blue Flag certifications for the benefit of Isla Mujeres and future generations.
