Isla Mujeres Civil Protection asking residents to ‘act responsibly’ after 15 fires extinguished

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Civil Protection and Firefighters of Isla Mujeres is asking people to act responsibly and avoid burning. More than a dozen fires have already been reported around the municipality of Isla Mujeres so far this forest fire season.

Carlos Gamboa Ortiz, the Director of Municipal Civil Protection, reported that since last week he has been working intensively to respond to various fires and outbreaks. He says the reports have been made in various neighborhoods of Ciudad Mujeres and in the town of Francisco May.

“These incidents have been detected thanks to the constant patrols of our personnel who have managed to extinguish all of them with their own resources. However, it is important to note that the majority of these fires are started by the residents themselves,” he clarified.

The official explained that to date, more than 15 cases have been responded to, some of them minor outbreaks, that could have gotten out of control.

He explained that the neighborhoods in the Continental Zone where these fires have been responded to are San José, San Román, Los Compadres, San Valentín 3, Divina Providencia, Caporal, Altamar, Allis 2, Col. Caporal, Las Flores, El Morro, Santa Fe, Maravillas and Las Flores, the latter covering approximately one hectare.

Another fire was also addressed in the Urban Zone and another in the town of Francisco May with an affected area of 100 x 20 meters. This fire was extinguished by volunteers under the supervision of Conafor along with the support of Civil Protection and Citizen Security. It took approximately 12 hours to control the blaze.
