Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Marina provided support to the crew of an American boat found stranded in Quintana Roo waters. The Mexican Navy, acting as Coast Guard, provided support to the crew of Carguito assisting in its towing to Isla Mujeres.
The tow was made after authorities received a call through the Fifth Naval Region, at which time personnel from the Isla Mujeres Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station (ENSAR), along with the ARM Alpheratz vessel, met the stranded boat.
“The above operation was carried out after receiving a call from the United States Coast Guard requesting assistance in towing a boat named Carguito, originating from Florida,” the Mexican Marina said in a statement.
The boat was en route to Mexico when it lost power and propulsion during its voyage, leaving it adrift with three crew members, also of U.S. origin, on board.
“This posed a serious danger to navigational safety, as the vessel was located in a fishing area. Therefore, it was determined that towing assistance was necessary,” they said.

As a result, the Fifth Naval Region ordered the immediate deployment of an MLB Defender-class vessel, belonging to the Islas Mujeres Search and Rescue Station (ENSAR), as well as an interceptor patrol boat with specialized personnel on board, to evacuate and tow the yacht.
Once the International Health and Immigration authorities arrived at the port, they implemented the established procedure for foreign vessels. Medical personnel from the Isla Mujeres Naval Hospital provided initial medical care to the crew members, taking precautionary measures and registering them with the Isla Mujeres Port Authority.
“In this way, the Mexican Navy, acting as the Coast Guard, continues working to ensure the safety of individuals and safeguard human life at sea,” they reported.
