Investigation started into group stealing car computers with “speed and precision”

Chetumal, Q.R. — Authorities in Chetumal are investigating a criminal cell recorded stealing auto parts. Home surveillance cameras owned by victims have recorded their vehicle parts being stolen during the night.

More than a dozen residents have reported waking up to missing vehicle parts, in particular, automotive computers. Southern District Prosecutor Aroshi Lugo confirmed that investigations are underway into a criminal group caught on camera stealing the parts.

According to vehicle security specialists, these automotive computers have a high value on the black market and are used to clone or reprogram stolen vehicles.

The group of men have been captured on camera targeting their victims at night and early in the morning. The thefts have been recorded primarily in the residential areas of Del Bosque, Forjadores, Adolfo López Mateos and Payo Obispo.

Lugo said that she could not provide details about the group believed responsible so as not to hinder the investigation, but did say an investigation is underway.

“For the moment we cannot provide further details, but rest assured that the investigation is underway. This is a crime that requires prosecution and people need to report it,” she said.

Following citizen reports, the State Attorney General (FGE) stated that they are following up on the reports in order to locate the offenders, who are “operating with speed and precision.” Similar theft reports have also been made in Merida and Cancun.
