Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun Transit officer videoed taking a bribe from a city driver has been suspended from duty. On Wednesday, the video of the bribe that began circulating online, caught the attention of the Secretaría Municipal de Seguridad Ciudadana y Tránsito (SMSCyT).
A nearby resident was able to capture a man pulling out his wallet and counting out bills that he then handed to the officer who remained sitting behind the wheel of his city transit vehicle. The pair and then videoed chatting for approximately 30 seconds.
After the video went viral, Cancun police reported on the suspension of the transit officer during an Internal Affairs investigation.
“The Benito Juárez Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit (SMSCyT) reports that, in relation to a video circulating on social media in which an officer assigned to unit 5664 is allegedly seen acting contrary to institutional guidelines, the corresponding actions have been initiated.

“As a result, the Internal Affairs Department opened case file SMSCT/DAI/008/01/2026 and initiated the corresponding procedure, ordering the officer’s preventive suspension from duty while the investigation is underway and the necessary steps are taken to clarify the facts and, if warranted, apply the corresponding disciplinary measures, in accordance with the Internal Regulations.
“The SMSCyT reiterates that conduct contrary to institutional principles will not be tolerated and reaffirms its commitment to human rights, legality, integrity, ethics and the vocation of service in police action.”
Late last year, Governor Mara Lezama announced the state’s plan to eliminate the position of Transit Officer throughout Quintana Roo with a new MOBI (Sistema de Movilidad del Bienestar Quintanarroense) plan.
According to Governor Lezama, the move is being made during 2026 because “We cannot continue to bear the stigma of having the most corrupt traffic police in the country where 81 percent of people feel distrust and are tired of having to negotiate in the streets… tired of extortion and abuses that hurt the dignity of everyone.”
