Cancun, Q.R. — An investigation into the shooting of a Cancun man by police has been started. Internal Affairs is investigating an incident that left a man in hospital with a bullet wound to his leg.
The incident happened Monday night in the Paraíso Maya neighborhood in SM 107 of Cancun when a Municipal Police officer fired his weapon. The man hit, a motorcycle driver, was taken to hospital.
According to available information, the driver of a motorcycle was asked to pull over around 10:00 p.m. when patrolling officers spotted the driver “acting suspiciously”. Instead of pulling over, the motorcycle driver sped off, ensuing a police chase where he was intercepted on Calamar Street and Del Sol Avenue.

There are reports of a struggle due to aggressiveness between the motorcycle driver and police at which time, one of the officers fired his service weapon, injuring the motorcycle driver in the leg.
Area resident witnesses rushed to the aide of the shot man, angered by the force used by police, however, police reported that during the operation, a group of people attempted to obstruct justice, creating a tense situation.

There have been media claims that the shot motorcycle driver is a known drug trafficker, something that has not been confirmed or denied by local authorities.
The case has been referred to the State Attorney General’s Office, where the appropriate legal action will be determined based on the investigations carried out.

Cancun police issued a brief statement saying “a case was opened in Internal Affairs for a police intervention on SM 107, where an officer fired his service weapon. The case was referred to the Prosecutor’s Office. The SMSCyT reiterates its commitment to legality, human rights, and security in Benito Juárez.”
