Cancun, Q.R. — State officials have begun an investigation into an altercation between a Cancun taxi driver and a Cancun Uber driver. The pair were captured on video Saturday night in a physical altercation outside a Cancun plaza.
On Sunday, officials reported an investigation into the altercation that will result in the removal of the taxi driver’s license and state concession as well as sanctions for the Uber driver.
In a statement, Rodrigo Alcazar Urrutia, the General Director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo), said the Institute will cancel the taxi driver’s license and revoke the concession and also take measures against the Uber operator.
On Saturday night, a Cancun taxi driver approached an Uber driver outside a plaza on Kukulcán Boulevard in the Cancun Hotel Zone after he stopped to let out passengers. When the Uber driver popped the trunk of his hatchback, the taxi driver approached.
During the exchange of words, the Uber driver digs under the mat of his trunk and pulls out a machete. Within moments, the pair are seen on the ground in a physical altercation.
The Instituto de Movilidad de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) said according to information gathered by witnesses and recordings, the drivers were caught physically attacking each other. First the digital platform driver threatened the taxi driver with a knife.
In response to these unfortunate events, Imoveqroo has taken immediate action in strict compliance with its zero tolerance policy towards violence and any impact on users in any mode of transport, they reported in a statement.
Once the operator and the taxi unit have been identified, the license of the driver involved will be cancelled and the concession will be revoked, as well as the permit holder of digital platform. Imoveqroo said the sanctions will be handed out based on Articles 122 section XV, 198 section III, subsection C, articles 199, 200, 201 and 202 of the Mobility Law of the State of Quintana Roo, while a thorough investigation of the incident is carried out.
“We have started an investigation into this case. The Institute will not tolerate any aggression or violence from drivers in the service of public or private transportation,” said Rodrigo Alcazar Urrutia.
The Institute will request coordinated actions with Public Security authorities in order to guarantee order and security in tourist areas.
“Our goal is to ensure that all transportation services in the state are carried out within a framework of respect, legality and safety for all users,” said Rodrigo Alcazar Urrutia.
