Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) closed a rustic road being built in Riviera Maya. Mass vegetation was reportedly illegally removed for the construction of the private road.
Profepa inspectors were made aware of the forest devastation after receiving numerous citizen complaints. During a weekend inspection, it was found that those responsible for the project did not have the corresponding environmental authorization. Federal inspectors have since requested proof of authorization.
“Profepa (National Forest Protection Agency) has closed the opening of a rural road between Playa del Carmen and Tulum where vegetation removal is observed in a medium-sized sub-evergreen forest ecosystem with the presence of chit palm trees.

“Those carrying out this work must submit their environmental impact authorization and a land use change permit for clearance in a forested zone,” they federal agency said.
