Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Municipal inspectors have ruled out wastewater as the discharge seen coming from an Isla Mujeres hotel. On Monday night, authorities responded to a social media report of wastewater being discharged into the sea outside a hotel.

The complaint was made by a citizen Monday afternoon who videoed bubbling water in the sea that was being discharged from a nearby hotel.
The Municipal Government of Isla Mujeres, headed by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, acted following the citizen complaint posted on social media regarding an alleged sewage discharge in the beach area in front of the Beló Hotel.

Through the Department of Environment and Ecology, a spot inspection was conducted at the reported site. Inspectors ruled out the presence of wastewater and confirmed that the work was part of dredging carried out by the establishment.
However, as part of compliance with environmental regulations and with the goal of safeguarding coastal ecosystems, the corresponding reports were drawn up and reported to the state Ministry of the Environment for further investigation.

The municipal government said that if appropriate, the application of sanctions established by law will be applied.

The Municipal Government reiterated that monitoring and responding to any environmental concerns is a priority and that it will continue to respond promptly and transparently to any situation that poses a risk to the natural resources of Isla Mujeres.
