Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Municipal authorities in Playa del Carmen have closed a property for illegal tree felling. Inspectors visited the lot on the corner of 4th Street and 20th Avenue where they found heavy machinery.

The machinery was being used to remove large boulders and fell trees. Orlando García, the PDC Directorate of Regulation and Environmental Impact Assessment, said part of the downed trees include a mahogany and red cedar.
García said he sent a group of inspectors to verify the conditions under which the work was being carried out following a complaint from neighbors. According to those complaints, they observed machinery felling trees and removing vegetation on the land, raising concerns about the environmental impact on the area.

During the Monday inspection, authorities from the Ministry of the Environment found that those responsible did not have the required permits. The property has been closed while inspectors determine the level of damage and corresponding fine.
