Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A private project in Puerto Morelos has been closed due to a lack of permits. Inspectors paid a visit to the property owner after neighbor reports of the illegally filling of a mangrove.
When the owner failed to produce the permits, inspectors returned and shut down the project. The irregular construction project was being carried out at a mangrove on the corner Cozumel and Niños Héroes streets in the town of Puerto Morelos.
According to the Municipal Secretariat of Environment, Animal Welfare and Sustainable Mobility, the property lacked the necessary permits. Despite summoning the alleged owner, she never appeared, prompting the closure.
The land was visited by environmental inspectors following a citizen complaint about the devastation of the mangrove forest and the introduction of fill material.

Last week, Ministry personnel visited the site and formally summoned the alleged owner to appear to explain the nature of the work and the permits she held, however, when she failed to appear, authorities proceeded with the closure.
Residents in the area reported that work began days earlier with light machinery and trucks dumping material in the wetland area.

The Municipal Department of Urban Development and Land Use Planning has also initiated a review of the case to verify whether any construction projects are linked to the property.
