Holbox, Q.R. — A Holbox building earmarked for an upcoming grocery store has been closed. Inspectors from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) and the Quintana Roo Environmental Protection Agency (PPA) have shut the project down.

According to the official notice posted on the wall, inspectors arrived on April 14th for a mandatory inspection. Since no one responded to their request, they revisited the site April 15 and again, were not met, which lead to the closure of the project.
The building on Tiburón Ballena Street being revamped for a Chedraui chain grocery store was, up until a few months ago, a hotel. The grocery store company had already begun demolition work near the site in preparation for their up and coming new location.
Earlier this month, islanders were quick to take to social media with the announcement of the company’s intentions. Many voiced their concern over the large chain entering the small island market, while others were in support of having a grocery store to even out prices and offer better products.

Authorities have not said if the closure of the Chedraui project is permanent or if it is a temporary closure until a formal inspection is carried out.
