Inauguration of Cancun Nichupté Bridge likely in coming weeks

Cancun, Q.R. — The official inauguration of the Cancun Nichupté Bridge will likely be at the end of March or start of April. Governor Mara Lezama said Thursday the bridge will be officially opened when President Claudia Sheinbaum can attend.

Governor Lezama said Thursday they are working to coordinate schedules with President Sheinbaum February 12, 2026.

She reported that they are working to coincide schedules between the inauguration of the Nichupté Bridge with the president’s work schedule. According to Lezama, President Sheinbaum will be in Quintana Roo in either late March or early April.

In the meantime, Governor Lezama said meetings are scheduled with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) regarding bridge work progress.

Cracks were found in support beams which delayed the initial January inauguration of the bridge January 2026.

The inauguration of the bridge was initially announced delayed last month after cracks were found in a section of support beams. Authorities became aware of the problem after cracks in the concrete heads that supports beams were seen in an underwater video.

Guido Mendiburu Solís who heads the SICT (Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes) in Quintana Roo, said at the time that the bridge is not unstable but “the decision was made to reform the work to guarantee safety.”

He said the bridge has been built on a lagoon bed with high karstity which is why some structural areas have shown mobility. To correct it, Solís explained that two piles would be built on each side of the bridge and a metal beam added at three other support points to guarantee stability.

Authorities are working to construct an overpass to easy Cancun Hotel Zone traffic 2026.

Governor Lezama said she will also meet with the SICT to discuss work related to the bridge’s intersection with Kukulcán Boulevard where a second level is planned. The overpass, which is considered a strategic point, would improve connectivity to the Cancun Hotel Zone.
