Imoveqroo reports 20 units impounded between Cancun and PDC for overcharging

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) inspectors continue with operations in both Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Imoveqroo head Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia reported that surveillance and inspection operations have been reinforced in both cities against the illegal increase in public transportation fares.

He said out of the 10 units towed Friday in Playa del Carmen, nine were sent to the impound lot for overcharging passengers. He says drivers will have to pay around 70,000 pesos to have their units returned.

“So far we have sent more than 20 units to the impound lot and we will continue until the approved rates set by Imoveqroo are returned,” he said. “They will have to pay a fine of up to 70,000 pesos to be able to remove their vehicles. We will continue with these operations every day,” he added.

Routes being inspected include routes 6, 78, 237, 100, 234, 225, 227, 97-99, 69, 259 and 71, among others in Cancun and Plaza de las Américas-Centro, Villas del Sol-Centro, and Guadalupana-Centro in Playa del Carmen.

He explained that more routes will be covered with the inspection operations, which will be permanent as long as there are complaints from passengers. Public transport passengers who were overcharged were refunded.

During the inspections where overcharging was found, “citizens were informed that the rate was not legal. They were given their money back, transported to their destination by an ADO vehicle and the public units were towed to the impound lot,” he said.

“These operations will be carried out in different municipalities where we will be ensuring that there are no abuses for the daily public transport users. We will be vigilant to ensure that the law is complied with,” he said.

Alcázar Urrutia stressed that no unit with a state concession (license) is authorized to increase their fares and if they do, they incur a serious offense based on the Mobility Law of the State of Quintana Roo.
