Chetumal, Q.R. — State inspectors began an operation in Chetumal Wednesday in response to public reports of fare increases. Residents of Chetumal began reporting being charged more than the allowed fares to ride the city’s combis.
As a result, inspectors from the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) set up roadside points where public transport vehicles were reviewed. The move came after numerous citizen reports of an illegal two peso price hike to ride public transport.
Inspectors set out to locate drivers illegally overcharging passengers.
State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez said some cases of overcharging were reported on foreign routes in the southern area, making it necessary to confirm that passengers are not being overcharged since operators do not have authorization.
“The operations will continue and will possibly be extended to other municipalities. It is not a hunt against operators, but an operation with the goal of preventing overcharging and, if necessary, sanctioning drivers who violate the Mobility Law and illegally increase the established rate,” she explained.
Torres also said stopped public transportation vehicles were also being inspected for the necessary permits, insurance policies and overall condition of the vehicle for the safety of those who travel in them.
On Wednesday, Imoveqroo (Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo) confirmed starting the Chetumal inspection operation.

“We started operations early in Chetumal to verify that public transport operators charge the authorized fares in response to multiple complaints about an increase in public transport prices. Throughout the State we remind citizens that there is no authorized increase in fares and they can report any improper charges.”
