Chetumal, Q.R. — A large sinkhole has appeared in a recently completed underground water line project in Chetumal. The several meter-long hole appeared less than two months after the Potable Water and Sewerage Commission (CAPA) handed over the finished drainage project. The project was subcontracted to MAYPE Construcciones SA de CV earlier this year.

When rains began Wednesday, a crack in the freshly paved street above the underground project appeared. By Thursday with the ongoing heavy rain, the crack turned into a long sinkhole. The hole is being attended to by city officials on Insurgentes Avenue from Isaac Medina Street to Aarón Merino Fernández Street in the Forjadores neighborhood.
This section of inner city road was recently paved following the completion of a large drainage project carried out by construction company MAYPE, a company subcontracted by CAPA.

In response, CAPA dispatched workers to repair the sinkhole in the rain. City officials have not commented on the newly formed hole above the recently completely project.
This is the same project where, in March, two construction workers were killed after the sides of the trench collapsed while several men were at the bottom of the hole installing the new drainage lines.
