Holbox, Q.R. — For the first time in the island’s history, Holbox will have its own fire, police and civil protection station. The government made the announcement Saturday after a recent visit to the island.

The site for new up-and-coming facility has already been cleared, making way for the start of construction. The new facility will be built in an initial phase of 556 square meters at a cost of 16.5 million pesos.
“I know what this means to the island, to know that in an emergency, help will be immediately available, that specialized personnel and equipment will be available day and night, ready to respond quickly and protect the most valuable thing we have: human lives,” the Governor said to residents.
Governor Lezama made the announcement with Lázaro Cárdenas Mayor Nivardo Mena Villanueva, who explained that Holbox is a unique place of beauty and one that is constantly growing. Lezama says there are nearly 2,000 residents and thousands of visitors arriving each year.

“And although it is a paradise, we also know that its status as an island demands special attention,” she stated, recalling a fire in June that endangered families and businesses, that left residents themselves responding first.

“That will change now,” she said, “since with an investment of more than 16.5 million pesos from the Trust Fund for Strengthening Security in the State, as well as state and municipal contributions, this comprehensive base will be built.”

The initial phase of the project will be a 556-square-meter facility that will include a reception area, restrooms and showers, a warehouse, a parking lot with maneuvering area, two 20,000-liter cisterns, cells for men and women, a juvenile detention center, a mediation room, a courtroom and everything necessary for the fire department, police, and civil protection to do their work efficiently, she detailed.
