Heavy rains from Nadine leaves section of southern highway washed out

Othón P. Blanco, Q.R. — A section of highway is currently under repair after being washed out by Tropical Storm Nadine. On Sunday afternoon, work began on the repair of the Morocoy Highway after it was left impassable due to heavy rain from the storm.

Governor Mara Lezama reported on the Morocoy-San Pedro Peralta highway in Othón P. Blanco, noting it has been temporarily closed while repairs progress.

“Heavy equipment is being used to clear the culvert that collapsed due to the currents caused by the large amount of water left by Tropical Storm Nadine near the south of Chetumal. Until it is fully repaired, the road is temporarily closed from the junction of state highway 186 to Morocoy,” she said.

The Governor announced that the communities of Morocoy, San Pedro Peralta, Lázaro Cárdenas and Limones can be accessed via the Altos de Sevilla, Bacalar road.

“We are working in coordination with authorities of the communities to guarantee the safety of all travelers. At the moment, there is no passage due to the repair work” she said in a late Sunday report.

It is not known how long repairs to the highway will take. Drivers have been advised to use an alternative route until further notice. Tropical Storm Nadine hit the coast of Quintana Roo Saturday afternoon, causing the most damage in the southern regions of the state.
