Heavy rain blamed for oily water catching fire and killing five at Pemex refinery

Paraíso, Tabasco — Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has confirmed the death of five workers in a refinery fire. The fire happened early Tuesday morning due to oily water overflow at the Olmeca refinery.

The oily water caught fire outside the refinery’s perimeter fence due to heavy rain. At least one of those killed was a Pemex worker.

“Pemex is monitoring the incident that occurred outside the Olmeca Refinery,” they said Tuesday in a statement.

“Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) regrets the deaths of five people and is providing care to the injured.

“Pemex confirms that heavy rains caused oily water to overflow from the Olmeca refinery, leading to a pooling of the liquid and its subsequent ignition outside the facility’s perimeter wall.

“As a result, five people tragically lost their lives, including a Pemex employee.

“The situation is now under control and poses no risk to the public or to Pemex workers. Personnel from the company’s Strategic Safeguarding area are collaborating with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the incident.

“Pemex expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. Furthermore, Pemex is providing comprehensive care and support to the injured, in coordination with the appropriate authorities, ensuring they receive the necessary assistance during this difficult time.”
