Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Health officials say there are less than a dozen cases of the measles across the entire state of Quintana Roo. Regardless of the low numbers, a measles vaccination program has begun for those wanting the shot.

On Wednesday, Governor Mara Lezama met online with President Claudia Sheinbaum. She was one of the 32 state governors across Mexico to participate in the virtual meeting in response to the measles outbreak.
According to the Federal Health Secretariat, who also participated in the Wednesday meeting, there are 10 cases in Quintana Roo. All 10 are stable and at home under medical supervision.
Governor Lezama specified Wednesday that four of the 10 infections are related to out of state travel.
Of the 10 cases across Quintana Roo, four have been found in Cancun, three in Playa del Carmen, two in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco and one case in Isla Mujeres. She did not specify if that case was on the island or the mainland.
Governor Lezama endorsed the federal health vaccination strategy while reiterating her call for citizens to get vaccinated and maintain preventive measures. She said to date, just over 5,700 vaccines have been administered, emphasizing that the priority is to immunize people who have not been vaccinated.

President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that there are over 28 million vaccinations available at 21,154 locations throughout the country which can be found at dondemevacuno.salud.gob.mx.
The 21,154 vaccination sites are open to children between six months and 12 years of age without complete vaccinations as well as unvaccinated individuals aged 13 to 49.
President Sheinbaum reported yesterday that the Mexican states with the highest number of cases are Jalisco, Colima, Chiapas, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Tabasco and Mexico City.

Health Secretary David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz said Wednesday that there are 9,074 total registered cases of the measles across the country.
“A very important fact is that the vast majority of the Mexican population is already vaccinated, a very significant number, and that is what is allowing us to control the outbreak,” he noted.

He reminded everyone that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that presents flu-like symptoms with runny nose or fever, and that for treatment, it is essential to see a doctor.
