Group searching for missing persons find five bodies outside town of Mahahual

Mahahual, Q.R. — A search group scouring an area outside the town of Mahahual located five bodies Wednesday. Authorities have confirmed the discovery and have said the skeletal remains are likely one-and-a-half years old.

On Wednesday afternoon, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported on the finding. Skeletal remains were located in a grassy area off the main highway several kilometers from the town of Mahahual.

The bodies were located during a missing persons search by police, canine units and Madres Buscadoras (Searching Mothers). The group chose that area after receiving information about the likeliness of finding human remains there.

Details surrounding the tip were not provided, however, on Wednesday their efforts paid off. Human remains were located in an area that was flooded and reportedly used to dispose of bodies.

FGE forensics personnel were brought in to assemble the bones found in makeshift graves.

“The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reports that in coordination with groups of mothers searching for their missing children, it conducted a search operation in the town of Mahahual in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco,” the FGE said Wednesday afternoon.

Police were part of the Wednesday search team when the skeletal remains were found. April 22, 2026.

Authorities confirmed the finding of “skeletal remains belonging to five individuals on the Cafetal-Mahahual highway”.

“According to initial findings, the remains are approximately one to one and a half years old,” they said.

“Specialized forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office are still at the scene processing the remains to gather evidence for analysis and identification.
