Group reports resumed construction of shut Holbox dock project

Holbox, Q.R. — A Holbox dock project that has been shut by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has resumed construction. The project was closed down July 12 for a lack of permits, however, over the weekend, island residents say construction has resumed.

The Mayab Environmental Group (Gema) reported that workers resumed construction of the dock in a virgin zone of Holbox despite being closed. Inspectors from Procuraduría Federal del Protección al Ambiente (Profepa) placed a closure seal across the dock earlier this month.

However, according to Grupo Ecologista de Mayab (Gema), work resumed over the weekend with workers removing the seal and continuing to build.

According to Gema, the area where the dock is being constructed is virgin and is the largest sea turtle nesting area on the island.

The illegal construction project was closed July 12, 2024.

“We hope that the competent authorities will take prompt action and that this case will not go unpunished like many others. We demand the dismantling of this structure since these activities are not permitted,” the environmental organization said in a statement.
