Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Five people accused of extorting a Puerto Morelos business have been taken into custody. On Sunday, the State Attorney General of Quintana Roo announced the arrests of the five suspected extortionists.
The arrests were made in coordination with the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC). Four men and one woman remain in custody “for their probable participation in acts that could constitute the crime of extortion against a legal entity whose identity is reserved,” the state’s Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) reported in a statement.
“Apolinar “N”, Ricardo Perfecto “N”, Mauricio “N”, Armando “N” and Leidy Yadira “N”, were arrested in flagrante delicto by elements of the Investigative Police assigned to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating the Crime of Kidnapping and Extortion, after collecting “floor fees” from the victim in this municipality.
“During a routine check, the detainees were found to have 40,000 pesos in cash, the product of the extortion they had been collecting weekly since March of this year, as well as a 9 mm caliber firearm.
“Initial investigations link the detainees to a criminal group that generates violence in the municipalities of Puerto Morelos and Benito Juárez, dedicated to the sale and distribution of drugs and extortion.
“Following the arrest, Apolinar “N”, Ricardo Perfecto “N”, Mauricio “N”, Armando “N” and Leidy Yadira “N”, as well as the seized evidence, were made available to the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” the FGE reported.
