Governor announces rescue of abandoned Cancun auditorium

Cancun, Q.R. — A Cancun building that has been abandoned for years is being revamped into an entertainment auditorium. The city’s Bienestar Auditorium is to become Cancun’s epicenter of culture and entertainment said Governor Mara Lezama.

Lezama toured the facility Thursday, which she reported, was built with public funds and for years has been abandoned and forgotten and has become a reflection of the corruption of previous governments.

The site, located on Colosio Boulevard, was an auditorium poorly built in the construction process and with low-quality materials, without minimum safety conditions and an imminent risk to the people, she pointed out.

Lezama says the building will be transformed into a true epicenter of Quintana Roo culture and entertainment, a dignified, safe and functional space for everyone to enjoy.

Lezama explained that since the beginning of her government, she has aimed to return to the people what belongs to them which are public spaces in decent condition, meeting places to strengthen the social fabric and build peace.

“This project, which was built with public funds, was forgotten for years. The auditorium was shoddily constructed with low-quality materials. What should have been solid walls were simply drywall, lacking the minimum safety standards, posing an imminent risk to the public. It will be transformed,” the Governor explained.

She said the restoration will be carried out in the same way as previous projects around the state including the Cancun Poliforum which is now home to El Calor de Cancún basketball team and the Bicentenario sports complex of Chetumal, which had also been abandoned for over a decade.

Referring to the site’s state of disrepair, the Lezama stated that a poorly constructed auditorium lacking minimum safety standards was not a public project, but a threat to the public.

“I’ll tell you… there were 40 percent more seats than allowed, no space to pass between attendees, the imminent risk of falling from the highest point of the venue, thousands of people in euphoria at a concert without enough emergency exits, without adequate stairs to evacuate quickly in case of any contingency, and well, they didn’t even consider parking, the minimum requirements for universal accessibility, or the number of bathrooms for the venue’s capacity,” she detailed.

Lezama reported that the site will be transformed into a safe, functional and dignified space that reflects the modernity Quintana Roo deserves.

“We are an honest government that fights corruption and with that, our money goes further, that’s why we will rescue it and transform it into a modern, safe, accessible, air-conditioned auditorium that will allow the public to enjoy a first-class experience, welcoming the people of Quintana Roo and those who visit us from all over Mexico, Latin America, and the world.”
