Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The government of Isla Mujeres has started a new paving project along Avenida Perimetral del Mar Caribe. Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde says she began the new project where an alternate road is being built in front of the sinkhole left by Hurricane Helen.

“This project aims to provide greater safety for tourists and locals traveling through the area,” she said. According to Atenea Gómez, the road was affected in 2024 by Hurricane Helen which caused a landslide along a section of the road creating a sinkhole.
The municipal government launched this new project, which includes the reconstruction of 90 linear meters of roadway as well as the construction of curbs and sidewalks.
Atenea Gómez said that thanks to the prompt attention and responsible planning of the municipal government, a temporary detour was designed to allow safe passage of vehicles while the necessary adjustments are made to fully restore the roadway.

“The completed project will include the demolition of damaged curbs and sidewalks, the removal of existing pavement, the formation and compaction of earthworks and the application of asphalt concrete,” she reported.

New curbs and sidewalks will also be built with specifications that allow for greater durability in the face of natural disasters.
