Government reports normalized sea levels around Isla Mujeres after Caribbean earthquake

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Civil Protection of Isla Mujeres continued to monitor the island coast Sunday after a Caribbean Sea tsunami warning. The warning was issued Saturday after an earthquake near the Cayman Islands.

On Saturday night, authorities were informing island residents about the possibility of rising water levels due to the earthquake. Civil Protection personnel, including those in Playa del Carmen and as far south as Tulum, monitored the sea.

Civil Protection Tulum were also out monitoring the sea Saturday night after the tsunami warning.

On Sunday, island personnel were out again in search of any sign of rising waters and/or damage. However, the Government of Isla Mujeres has said “sea level conditions have already normalized.”

“The Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection to carried out preventive monitoring and tours after the earthquake recently registered in the Cayman Islands. Following the instructions of Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, who at all times prioritized the safety of the island families, a protocol was activated coordinated with the State Coordination of Civil Protection, which contemplated immediate tours to verify possible damages.

“As a preventive measure, the corresponding protocol was activated, inviting citizens to avoid approaching the cliffs, especially in the Punta Sur and Mirador Oriente areas. Although no structural damage or risks to the population were reported, monitoring and tours continued Sunday morning.

“The Tsunami Alert Center of the Secretariat of the Navy reported that the sea level on the coasts of Mexico registered an increase of .11 meters in Isla Mujeres after the earthquake, however, by Sunday, the sea level conditions have already normalized.

“The tours included inspections in the Caribbean Sea as well as Isla Blanca within the Continental Zone of the municipality. The Municipal Government highlights the coordination with the State Coordination of Civil Protection and the Secretary of the Navy, who have worked together to reinforce the security of the inhabitants of Isla Mujeres,” Ayuntamiento de Isla Mujeres reported in an official statement.
