Government of Quintana Roo reports ‘no material damage or injuries’ from 6.1 earthquake off coast of Cuba

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Emergency personnel around the state an earthquake off the coast of Cuba was felt around Quintana Roo. In response, Civil Protection protocols were successfully activated Monday in at least three municipalities.

According to the Government of Quintana Roo “seismic activity was felt in various municipalities of the state, with no material damage or injuries reported. Authorities conducted verification tours in buildings, schools, shopping centers and strategic areas throughout the state.”

On Monday, the Government of Quintana Roo said “according to preliminary reports, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake was recorded with its epicenter 104 kilometers west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba , and approximately 250 kilometers off the coast of Quintana Roo.

“According to information from the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), there is no tsunami risk to the coast of Quintana Roo resulting from this event.

“At this time, no damage or injuries have been reported. However, as a preventive measure, verification and monitoring protocols remain active in vulnerable areas, airports, tourist zones, shopping centers, public buildings, and strategic infrastructure.

“We recommend that citizens, upon returning home, conduct a preventive inspection of their homes and immediately report any possible damage or hazardous situation to 911. Stay informed only through official channels and avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.”

Governor Mara Lezama said Monday that a magnitude 6.1 earthquake was recorded  104 kilometers west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, and approximately 250 kilometers from the coast of Quintana Roo, which was felt in different municipalities in the north, center and south of the state.

The State Civil Protection Coordination, in conjunction with government authorities, immediately activated emergency and prevention protocols in public buildings, shopping centers, schools, tourist areas, and strategic properties throughout the state.

Buildings in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Othón P. Blanco were evacuated, but quickly resumed operations after danger was ruled out.

Subsequently, monitoring and verification tours were carried out in the 11 municipalities of Quintana Roo to rule out possible damage to infrastructure, basic services or risks to the population, without any material damage or injuries being reported.

Likewise, the Navy Secretariat reported that there was no tsunami risk to the state’s coasts, and maritime conditions remained normal.

Preventive inspections were carried out by state Civil Protection personnel in coordination with municipal Civil Protection departments, emergency services and security authorities, who kept monitoring and patrols active until all risks were ruled out.

“The correct application of security protocols demonstrated the importance of constant training, a culture of prevention, and citizen participation in emergency situations, allowing for an orderly and efficient response to safeguard the integrity of the people of Quintana Roo,” said Governor Mara Lezama.

Guillermo Núñez Leal, the General Director of State Civil Protection, urged citizens to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information to prevent confusion and maintain calm among the population.
