General Motors announces 80,000 of their best selling Mexico cars set for local production

Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila — General Motors says they will produce 80,000 cars for domestic consumption that were previously imported. The local production of the vehicles is part of the company’s $1 billion USD investment announced in January of this year.

The announcement was made Tuesday by Francisco Garza Rodríguez, President and CEO of General Motors Mexico May 19, 2026.

Starting next year, two of their best-selling models in Mexico will be produced in the country. Currently, they are produced in Asia and imported.

Francisco Garza Rodríguez, President and CEO of General Motors Mexico, said the local assembly of their Chevrolet Groove and Chevrolet Aveo will begin in 2027.

Production will take place in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, where the company has five plants employing more than 5,000 workers.

“We believe in Mexico, we invest in Mexico, and we continue to grow with Mexico,” he said Tuesday.

President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the Mexico Plan is about believing in and thinking about Mexican workers.

“I want to thank General Motors because what was just an idea a little over a year ago is now a reality. Thank you so much. This is the vision of believing in Mexico, of thinking about Mexico, and of thinking about Mexican workers. This is Plan Mexico.”

GM has committed to the production of an additional 80,000 vehicles in Mexico May 19, 2026.

She said the Mexico Plan aims to increase domestic production to reduce imports, and therefore, in the face of tariffs imposed on vehicle production, the goal is for automotive companies to remain in Mexico.

Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón stated that the production of 80,000 vehicles will protect jobs, mean more investment, and, as a result, the cars will have more parts made in the country.

The company employs over 700 Mexican engineers May 19, 2026.

Garza Rodríguez said General Motors has been in Mexico for 30 years and employs over 23,000 people. He said local assembly of the Chevrolet Groove and Chevrolet Aveo models will begin in 2027.

The goal, he said, is to reach an approximate capacity of 80,000 vehicles per year by 2030.
