Riviera Maya, Q.R. — After a quiet two weeks, two systems were detected in the Atlantic this week. One one came and quickly went after dissipating, while the second is forecast to develop next week.
On Thursday morning, the National Hurricane Centre (NOAA) reported on the increase in likely development for a tropical wave located in the central Tropical Atlantic. The system, which is currently producing showers and thunderstorms, has doubled its probability of further development since yesterday.
“A tropical wave over the central Tropical Atlantic Ocean is producing some disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system, and a tropical depression could form by early next week while it moves westward at 10 to 15 mph and approaches the Lesser Antilles,” the NOAA reported.
“The system is then forecast to move westward to west-northwestward across portions of the eastern Caribbean Sea during the middle part of next week,” the NOAA said Thursday morning.
If the system continues to develop into a named storm, it will become Francine, the sixth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, above the average of four for this time of year.
In the meantime, scattered thunderstorms are forecast for the remainder of the week across Quintana Roo. According to the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), on Thursday, as much as 50 mms of rain is expected along the coast.
