Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: A suspect in homicides and extortions around the city of Cancun has been captured. Miguel Cuéllar, once the commander of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office, was taken into custody on two outstanding warrants.
Miguel Ángel Cuéllar Rangel is a known member of the Sinaloa Cartel with the alias El Tigre. He was arrested in the city of Pachuca, Hidalgo Tuesday. Police tracked him down using technology and the various last known addresses in Quintana Roo, Nuevo León and Mexico City. During a recent follow-up, he was located and subsequently arrested in Pachuca, Hidalgo.
Omar Garcia Harfuch, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico, said Tuesday, “thanks to the coordination between institutions of the security cabinet, the arrest of Miguel Ángel “N” was achieved. He is a priority target in Quintana Roo. He has two arrest warrants for aggravated homicide.”
Cuéllar once served as the commander of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for drug dealing. He is accused of being a member of the Sinaloa Cartel and the main operator of extortions and homicides in Cancun.
The arrest was made as a result of investigations by the Security Cabinet, the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena), the Navy Secretariat (Semar), the National Guard (GN), the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).
Cuéllar Rangel is credited with leading a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel in the region, which made him one of the main generators of violence in the state.
UPDATE: The Quintana Roo Investigative Police (PDI) say Miguel Ángel Cuéllar Rangel did not hold the position of chief of police, but was commander of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Drug Dealing during the 2023 administration of Óscar Montes de Oca Rosales as Attorney General of the State.
