Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Over two dozen people were evacuated from at least two Playa del Carmen buildings Wednesday. Civil Protection and city firemen evacuated residents due to reports of a roof fire that quickly spread.
Emergency services were at the Sac-Be condominium building Wednesday night to extinguish a palapa that had burst into flames. Playa del Carmen firemen reported the fire started in a thatched roof and spread to other rooms and common areas of the building.
The flaming palapa grass began falling to the ground which forced the evacuation of 13 others from an adjacent building. While no injuries were reported, there was substantial damage to the building.
On Wednesday, Bomberos Playa del Carmen reported on the fire.
“Playa del Carmen firefighters extinguished a fire at a condominium in tourist area. The Playa del Carmen government, through the Secretariat of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Firefighters, attended to a fire that was reported at the Sac-Be condominium. 28 people were evacuated as a precautionary measure, with no injuries reported.
“The fire originated in the rooftop thatched roof and reached rooms and common areas of the complex, which has 12 apartments. Therefore, all 15 residents were evacuated. Due to the fall of incandescent material, 13 people were evacuated from the adjacent building.

“Immediately, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, the Secretariat of Citizen Security, Tourist Police and emergency services responding to the report managed to completely contain the fire and established a security perimeter to protect residents.

“The Playa del Carmen City Council reaffirms its commitment to protecting families and providing immediate emergency response, highlighting the inter-institutional coordination that allowed this incident to be mitigated without any human losses.”
