Holbox, Q.R. — On Tuesday, authorities laid the first stone to begin construction of the Holbox Police and Fire Station. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa said the building is a strategic infrastructure that will strengthen the operational capacity of the security and emergency response forces on this island.
“Today we come to deliver for Holbox, we come to tell you with actions, that this island matters, that its people matter, that its tranquility matters,” she said accompanied by Lázaro Cárdenas mayor Nivardo Mena Villanueva.

The construction project involves building a facility that will eventually house police, fire and civil protection for the island. The new facility will be built in an initial phase of 556 square meters at a cost of 16.5 million pesos.
Governor Lezama says the money is part of the state government’s commitment to guarantee safe environments for the population and for those who visit the state.
“This is a humanist government, a government that listens, understands and attends to the needs of the people, that does not govern from behind a desk, but by walking the territory and responding to the real needs of the people,” she said Tuesday.

Julio César Gómez Torres, the Secretary of Citizen Security, Brigadier General DEM Fidel Mondragón Rivero, commander of the 34th Military Zone and Admiral Guadalupe Juan José Bernal Méndez, commander of the V Naval Region participated in the laying of the first stone Tuesday.
Governor Lezama said that Holbox is a vibrant, island community experiencing growth, employment, and tourism, but also facing challenges. For many years, it lacked formal infrastructure for emergency response and public safety. This absence created uncertainty and vulnerability.
She said this project is designed to improve response times, strengthen surveillance, and reduce the perception of insecurity.
“This investment translates into social peace and better living conditions. This project will allow for a more timely, efficient, and coordinated response to emergencies, crimes, and fires, contributing to the protection of Holbox families, as well as strengthening its tourism sector and its sustainable development,” she stated.

Before laying the first stone, the Governor affirmed that when there are decent facilities, there are better conditions for those who care for the community, but above all, there is greater confidence for families and greater certainty of social justice, because social justice also means that the state is present where it was previously absent.
She said that the islands have the same rights as any other community and that no one is left behind. She first announced the up-and-coming construction of the Holbox police, fire and civil protection station in October of 2025.
