Firemen battle 32 fires over the weekend 20 of which were wildfires due to negligent activity

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Firemen report attending to a total of 32 fires over the weekend around the municipality of Playa del Carmen. Of those fires, they say 20 were wildfires.

According to Playa del Carmen Civil Protection, firemen are focusing their fire battling efforts in the western region of the municipality due to ongoing outbreaks. Municipal authorities say negligent activities have been the main cause of the fires they have been fighting.

Vacant lots in Villas del Sol, Los Pájaros and Xcacel neighborhoods made the list of the 12 urban fires fought over the past few days.

Yivi Méndez Jiménez, the Director of the corporation, explained that some fires, such as the one that occurred on Xel Ha Avenue, flared up again during the night despite initial efforts to extinguish it.

He said firemen were back on the scene for a second intervention by emergency teams to put that same fire out. While battleing that fire for a second time, he said several personnel suffered minor injuries due to the terrain conditions, characterized by rock formations and hollows that, combined with poor visibility, posed an additional risk.

“Over the weekend, members of the Civil Protection, Risk Prevention, and Fire Department fought and controlled 32 fires, 20 of which were wildfires.
