Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Island road work in central Isla Mujeres is scheduled to start on Monday. On May 11, the renovations on the final section of the island’s busy Rueda Medina Avenue will be started.
Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde says at the moment, work is underway between the taxi stand and the Fifth Naval Region headquarters as part of the preparations for the main project.
Starting Monday, work will be started in stages one block at a time with each stage taking approximately two weeks. The work being done includes building curbs and sidewalks and the modernization of street lights.
According to Gómez, the project is expected to be finished by August 2. In a press notice, she announced “the renovation of the final section of Rueda Medina Avenue will begin next Monday, May 11.
“This project will improve mobility, safety, and the overall appearance of the municipality’s main avenue.”
She explained that preliminary cleaning work is currently underway on the section between the taxi stand and the Fifth Naval Region headquarters, as part of the preparations for the main start of the project.

Gómez said that the work will be carried out in stages, progressing one block at a time with each stage lasting approximately two weeks, and is scheduled for completion on August 2.
She also reported that the project includes the construction of curbs and sidewalks, the modernization of street lighting, and the installation of 23 decorative matchstick-style lamps. Those lamps, she said, are similar to those installed along the boardwalk and will enhance the tourist appeal of Isla Mujeres.
Atenea Gómez urged residents to take precautions during the construction work, as there will be partial road closures as the project progresses. She recommended leaving early and using Juárez Avenue as an alternate route to access the island’s center.
She reiterated that while the construction may cause temporary inconveniences, it will bring lasting benefits to island families by creating a more organized, modern, and competitive municipality as a world-class tourist destination.
