Feds shut down 10-story Puerto Morelos real estate development for lack of environmental authorization

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Federal inspectors have shut down a real estate development in the coastal area of Puerto Morelos. The 10-story building has been closed for failing to submit an environmental impact statement prior to construction.

Inspectors from the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection paid a visit to the real estate project May 14. Profepa (Procuraduria Federal de Proteccion al Ambiente) have since closed it after learning Semarnat (Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources) did not grant environmental authorization.

“Profepa closed the real estate development located within a coastal ecosystem in Puerto Morelos for not having the required environmental impact authorization issued by Semarnat (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales),” the government agency said.

“Following a surveillance tour of the coastal area, the real estate development under construction (10 levels with a pool) was located. On May 14, during the inspection, they failed to present the environmental impact authorization, resulting in the temporary total closure of the project,” Profepa said.

“The illegal construction of real estate developments on coastal strips leaves serious impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. These types of developments require environmental impact authorization that establishes the necessary impact mitigation measures.

“We will continue working to enforce the law and protect our coastal ecosystems throughout the country,” stated Attorney General Mariana Boy Tamborrell.

According to Tamborrell, Profepa will continue to monitor the procedure to ensure that the imposed closure is respected, otherwise, a corresponding complaint will be filed.
